Drew Barbes of The Morning Kings recently announced on Facebook that he is considering stealing someone’s status.

“One day, I want to steal someone’s status, word for word, and see if they notice.”

If you are as outraged by this possibility as I am, you can tell him yourself on Friday.  The Morning Kings will be in the Twin Cities to open at the Wild Thymes.  They are scheduled to play from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., but the band suggests you get there early — like 11:00 a.m.  I’m not kidding.  Here’s the invite.

Dead Sound Music Company To Host The Twin Cities Music Scene Presidential Nominations and Debates

On Saturday from 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Dead Sound Music Company, LLC, will be hosting the Twin Cities Music Scene Presidential Nominations and Debates.  The debates will be professionally filmed by Michael Hanson of Nu Vu Media Group LLC.

Michael Hanson proposed the idea of the debates and advocated the following rules:

1. The candidates will have to be drunk as the most honest truth comes out when people are drunk.
2. This will be an open invite to all the Demicans and Republicrats candidates.
3. Fringe candidates will be completely ignored and will be forced to serve the Republicrat and Demican candidates shots and beers.

Official Rules will be announced at the ceremony.  The video will be available on YouTube shortly after the debates.

Okay, I know this one is not specifically for musicians, but hey, get paid to have your feet rubbed.  What’s creepy about that?  And he doesn’t say you have to be female.  Usually you have to pay for stuff like that, but here this gentleman is willing to pay you.  While you sit back and do whatever — practice guitar, brush your teeth, trim your nose hairs — totally a two-fer there.

As people become less willing to pay for music, are independent artists being forced into a new line of work?  Could this be what musicians have been reduced to?  Garment salesman?

SiaNet Radio Begins Renovations on Clubhouse Studio

SiaNet Radio has begun renovations of the Clubhouse Studio this weekend.  Christo Peters, CEO and janitor of  SiaNet Radio, stated that the renovations were necessary to continue producing the Clubhouse Show during extreme temperatures and soundproofing is necessary because his neighbors dog is annoying and he doesn’t want to hear it anymore.  He also hopes the new space will accommodate more live DJs.  DJs currently work from remote locations.  Negotiations are underway with Awesome Cups to rent studio space in the new location as well.  For those of you worried that Animal may lose his home on the turquoise toilet: never fear renovations will include a home for both of them.

Campaign Statement: I’ve been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn’t understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins’ presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group’s undisputed masterpiece. It’s an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I’ve heard in rock. Phil Collins’ solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

NYG @ CAR – I find it hard to believe that New York will be hitting on all cylinders with Nicks and Bradshaw out. Since Carolina is at home I’m taking Carolina and Steve Smith with a big game. Cam Newton may not be lighting it up yet but they have a decent oline and three power backs they should be able to hold off the new york pass rush fairly well. CAR wins.

STL @ CHI – Shitcago should win this game in a land slide assuming Jay Cutler has his shit together. STL is playing better no doubt but they havent exactly played stellar defenses yet either. This week is a fantastic week for them to prove their worth against a really good pass rush and line backing corp in shitcago. Chicago wins.

BUF @ CLE Flip a coin. You can never tell which Buffalo team you are going to get. Their defense is supposed to be really good and so far its putrid. CJ Spiller is really the only bright spot so far. 10 yard a carry! WTF? Cleveland showed signs of life last week and Trent Richardson had an impact. Weeden had more TDs then INTs its a good start. One thing I do like is Cleveland has a decent defense. They are missing Joe Haden and still playing well. Vegas has Cleveland at as the 3 point underdog. I like a good story Cleveland wins at home.

TB @ DAL – Tampa is playing well under Sciano. I am a Romo fan and normally he plays well at home. After last weeks embarrassment at Seattle I think they are out for blood. The speedy and physical receivers of Dallas should be able to find some sort of openings in a weak defense. On the flipside the two headed run attack of Martin/Blount should get 4 yards a carry and a tuddy. Dallas wins.

JAC @ IND – Here is why I like games like these, they are the future leaders of the NFL. Gabbert has been fairly good so far the really question is how does his new injury effect his play? Andrew Luck has flashed signs of greatness already. Granted he beat Minnesota his offense really just has Reggie Wayne as a legit weapon. Jacksonvilles defense hasnt played to their potential yet and Indys defense is average at best. This is really another flip a coin game so I’ll take Andrew Luck at home for the Indy win.

NYJ @ MIA – Miami wins based on these facts. Its a home game, I hate Tebow, Miami has momentum now and Reggie Bush has started to look like an actual running back since going to Miami.

SF @ MIN – San Fran wins. Minnesotas defense leaks terribly.

KC @ NO – New Orleans should have this game in the bag before it even starts. KC seems to be shitty in every aspect of the game right now. I dont even think they cover the 9 point spread. NO in a 2 TD win.

DET @ TEN – Tennessee is so bad on both sides of the ball. I’m sure they are regretting not having Hasselback starting as their QB right now. Detroit should go into TN and win. Their offense isnt clicking completely but with Leshure back and a soft TN defense they should get it moving. Detoilet wins.

CIN @ WAS – Red Rifle vs RG3. I love it! I hope I get this game on regional coverage. Washington loses two pass rushers for significant time. Orakpo is gone for the season. Leaving Ryan Kerrigan on his lonesome. I think Cincy pounds the edges with Green-Ellis opening up play action and a monster game for AJ Green. RG3 will see a tough defense for the first time this season. Cincy has a solid secondary and good dline. Fred Davis is dinged up after last week and their WR corps is average at best. Cincy wins.

PHI @ ARI – Arizonas Defense has played fantastic so far this season unfortunately their offense is a mess. Fitzgerald hasnt been a factor AT ALL. Their QBs suck. Their RBs are trash. Philly has turnover problems but have overcome them twice for wins. Philly goes 3-0 to start the season.

ATL @ SD – Historically Atlanta has done well against Sand Diego and I believe it continues. Atlanta is rolling offensively through the first two weeks of the season and SD defense isnt stellar by any means. I do think they get Turner the ball more and Roddy White catches atleast one tuddy while all the attention is placed on Julio Jones. Atlanta wins.

HOU @ DEN – This game should be awesome. I believe both teams are well rounded and lack in few areas. I’m calling for a Denver win. Yes, this is my upset pick. Peyton Manning has historically destroyed Houston. The momentum of the 4th quarter last Monday Night Football could be compounded by a home crowd. Houstons defense is really good and JJ Watt will get his numbers, but they are vulnerable. Arian Foster has had carries taken away from him by Ben Tate for whatever reason. Regardless they are both getting their numbers on the ground. Denver has been fairly sound in both the pass and the rush as of the first two weeks. Like I said Denver wins.

PIT @ OAK – Oakland sucks all around end of story. Pittsburgh wins.

NE @ BAL – Normally I would lose my shit over a game like this. I love Baltimores defense and a high powered Tom Brady offense. Although this season so far is quite different. The Baltimore D is beastly and the offense has one upped them. Last weeks PHI BAL game was awesome and BALT deserved a win but its the NFL you have to score more hahaha. New England just seems completely out of sync despite the defense becoming substantially better this season. Baltimore wins.

GB @ SEA – As a Packers fan this game bothers me. The offense hasn’t clicked yet. They go into Seattle a very tough place to play and even Aaron Rodgers said that it is the 2nd loudest place in the NFL to play. Seattles defense is young, quick and ball hawking. Vegas has the Packers as a 3.5 point favorite. If the defense of GB can cause a chaos like they did to CHI then it should be a victory. GB wins…….barely.

Janis Joplin once said, “Don’t compromise yourself. You’re all you’ve got.”  This is a lesson that Krysta Rayford of K.Raydio has learned repeatedly over the past two years.  Although she has been passionate about writing since she first learned her letters, it took an epiphany moment in 2010 to get past the fear of performing and the resistance of others.

In June of 2010 Krysta graduated from college.  She and her friends drove to Chicago to see two of her biggest influences, Erykah Badu and Janelle Monae.  After the concert she Met Monae as well as some of the Wondaland Arts Society crew.  Rayford said, ” it was one of the best days of my life. It definitely changed everything. … I am constantly inspired by Erykah Badu and Janelle Monae because of everything that they stand for. They embrace their “otherness” in a way that only other people who can identify with it can understand. They’re leaders in their own right and their careers continue to broaden and grow within other industries, which from both a creative and entrepreneurial sense, I directly relate with. “

Rayford soon began working with Man Mantis as a producer and sound engineer.  The intensive sessions between the two of them quickly produced two EP’s, Significant (Other) Parts I & II.  “[S]ongwriting sessions were very cohesive because I had him as a producer and sound engineer to bounce ideas off of right away… [T}here will never be another Man Mantis. I just wanted to say that. He is superhuman in his work ethic and his personality."

The ease she found with her EPs did not last.  After releasing Significant (Other) II in March of 2011, the “real world” began to intrude on her life.  ”The past year and a half have been much more realistic and harder, because the responsibility of being an adult hit and time for writing songs started to feel more forced. … I went through months of writer’s block after taking my last job, and it was largely due to not taking good care of myself and being stressed out of my mind.”  She also began to censor herself because she was working for a school.  Her students paid attention to her lyrics and she didn’t want to be a bad influence. She had to learn to separate the two worlds.  Ultimately, she accepted that she is a good role model and that tough times can be inspiration.  ”As I get back on track, I find most of my songwriting ideas from focusing on conversations I’ve had with other people, or walking/driving around Minneapolis listening to beats.  … I realized when I took a step back, that everything I was going through made for great songwriting material. … I will say that all of my lyrics are biographical in some way”  Rayford says even when a song is not about herself, it is inspired by someone in her life.  ”My recent work has unfortunately been inspired by the various injustices in this world, and my deep realization that my generation has to wake up — and quickly. Human nature constantly inspires me. Soul music. Rain. Leaves changing color. The underdogs. They all inspire me.”

Rayford has spent the last two years polishing her writing skills.  Although she has always considered herself a writer, when she committed to her music, she began an intensive self-study of song writing and proper structure.  ”I never had a methodical way of approaching writing a poem or a song.  I have definitely learned way more about formulaic songwriting the past two years, but one of the reasons I didn’t write songs for a long time was because I was unsure of how to approach it (structure-wise). … A lot of my songs have more hip-hop structure within them because most of my early studio sessions were with hip hop artists and producers.”

Rayford finds it more genuine to write her own lyrics for her personal projects and her part of a collaborative project.   She is more open to direction from her producers when it comes to the music.  ”Some producers give me free reign with their production, but others will say that they have a direction that they want the track to go in … And that’s what it’s all about. … I want producers to feel involved as much as I am with each project.”  She has worked with many producers and is currently recording with Brady Glenn. “[H]e has been like a big brother, mentor, and amazing engineer all in one, so I have to give my love to Brady.”

While in Denver last summer, she learned “the independent music scene there looked to the Twin Cities as a blueprint and praised the mess out of us here. It was really cool. ” She feels that in contrast to other markets with mostly mainstream radio stations, we have local stations “that really do an amazing job of trying to showcase the local talent that we have here.”

 My Outro (Dedicated to Lena Horne)

“I perform “My Outro” at the end of every one of my sets. It was one of the first songs I wrote at the beginning of my journey and is a dedication to Lena Horne, who was an early inspiration in my life. It always reminds me of where I’ve come from and how to stay motivated. It’s as if it has a therapeutic release and it rejuvenates me. This is my favorite.”

Free Music Production Classes for Minneapolis Teens

The Minneapolis Park System, Institute of Production and Recording (IPR) and the Jackie Lee Robinson Foundation (JLRF)  are offering a free music production program for kids 12 to 18 years old. This introduction to creating music production uses the most current technology and is designed to  provide participants opportunities to learn recording techniques, record audio and video information on digital work stations, study music creation basics and various computer software programs to create music tracks, produce and record individual multimedia projects, develop skills in the areas of collaboration, presentation, completion and delivery, and acquire professional capabilities. The program is offered at two locations during October and November: East Phillips Park on Mondays and Tuesdays, 6:00—8:00 p.m. and Powderhorn Park on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 6:00—8:00 p.m. Registration is required.

Dessa has just announced that her lipcolor is now available for pre-order.  The color is described as a custom-crafted, rich, matte red. Dessa will be donating 100% of her proceeds (20% of the profit) to the charitable organization CARE. Funds will be used to support girls’ education around the world.

This line and the project was created by Minneapolis chemist and entrepreneur Karoline Wells who founded The Elixery, an artisan, indie cosmetic house. Working out of her little lab, she formulates all of her products herself, pouring each stick of lipstick by hand. Her ingredients are meticulously and responsbility sourced, making all of her products cruelty-free. To create the “Dessa” color, she partnerened with Dessa herself, and the Emmy-winning make-up artist Crist Ballas. With some creative color ratios, Crist designed a red that could be universally flattering, even to olive tones.

Charity Navigator has given CARE a rating of 3 out of 4 stars.  Tubes are $18 and can be pre-ordered through DoomTree or The Elixery.

Josh Misner Recommends Not Eating Corned Beef

Josh Misner of Nicole and the Avalanche recently suggested,

“I highly recommend not eating nearly a 1/2 lb of corned beef after 10:00 pm…on an empty stomach.”

According to Misner this combination causes a sodium coma.  If you would like more details on sodium comas and corned beef, Nicole and the Avalanche will be headlining the Cause Sound and Spirits on Thursday night.  I’m sure he would be happy to fill you in on the details. Howth Cometh: Carl Creighton’s Triumphant Return to The Twin Cities from Brooklyn

Prior Lake Native Carl Creighton will be returning to the Twin Cities with his current band, Howth.  Howth is based out of Brooklyn, New York and is in the midst of a short North American Tour to promote the release of its album, Newkirk.  The band will be playing one show in St. Paul at the Wild Tymes Cafe on Friday as part of a DEMO (Diverse Emerging Music Organization) line up.  This show is part of the SiaNet Radio Concert Series.

Then in a different game a personal foul on Nick Perry for celebrating his first sack in the NFL. So stupid! Why sacrifice the quality of the game over $?

Buffalo- Can Fitzpatrick replicate his first half of 2011 and will Fred Jackson be able to stay healthy for the whole season?
Miami- Will Chad Johnson be a threat? Who is the starting Quarterback? Will Joe Philbin be able to take the team to the playoffs in a difficult division?

Oakland- Carson Palmer is the starting QB. With a full off season can he turn around this franchises offensive problems? Can Darren McFadden stay healthy an entire season and be a Pro Bowl level player?
San Diego- Can Phillip Rivers cut back on the interceptions? Is Antonio Gates totally healthy? Can their youth movement on defense provide Takeo Spikes and Eric Weddle with help?

Mason Jennings recently meditated on a photo of the Dalai Lama and Carl Sagan and theorized:

I think The Dalai Lama has just given Carl some space directions. Carl is now saying “Ok, so you’re saying: go past two galaxies and then turn left at the Dunkin Donuts…then go 6 billion light years….is that right?”

“Maybe” says the Dalai Lama.
“Oh, Dalai” says Carl, “you are hands down cracking me up!”
“Bingo!” smiles The Dalai Lama.
Or….another scenario….it also kinda looks as if (God forbid) Carl is about to back hand slap the Dalai Lama. Or maybe he’s been slapping him for 15 minutes already and The Dalai Lama is saying gently but firmly: “Carl, come on. Stop slapping me. Carl. Stop it. Come on.” Real quiet like.
The weird thing with pictures is that they actually said something specific at this moment. There is an actual word Carl is saying. Just like there is an actual number of words each of us has said. And an actual number of donuts in a dozen. Usually.

Minnesota Child Releases Limited Edition EP

Ethan Buckner a/k/a  The Minnesota Child has just released a limited edition of his EP, Take Me Away.  The new pressing is currently limited to 500 copies and offers a fresh new track — Concrete Jungle feat. Ashley Nichole; new album art created by Buckner; and new eco-friendly packaging.  Buckner said the new album was leaving him “feeling alive and inspired!!”  Buckner is currently writing and expects new material soon.

In the Morning will be playing their final performance on Friday at Hell’s Kitchen as part of the SiaNet Radio Concert Series.  Joining ITM and wishing them a fond farewell will be Casanatra and All The Way Rider. Cwnn Annwn Cites Scientific Evidence To The Benefits Of Their Music

Cwnn Annwn cited an article from The Telegraph claiming that gifted adolescents are drawn to Heavy Metal Music to cope with the pressures associated with being talented.  The study was released in 2007 by Stuart Cadwallader, a psychologist at the University of Warwick.  If you would like to test this theory out yourself, you can listen to Cwnn Annwn’s music on Reverb Nation.  Let me know the results.  We all would like a little relief from the pressure associated with being talented.
